Hello! My name is Desoni Cooper, I am currently a sophomore majoring in Documentary Studies and Production (Doc Studies) with a minor in Finance.

I was first attracted to filmmaking back when I created YouTube videos during my high school years. I decided to pursue Doc Studies because it’s a creative outlet that calls for authenticity and nonfiction storytelling.

I took various film classes during my junior and senior years of high school such as the Downtown Community Television Center (DCTV), Five Towns College, and courses taught in high school.

Through these experiences, I grew a deeper desire to understand the craft of film, which led me to attend the Roy Park School of Communications.

The Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival will be the first film festival I attend and intern at. This excites me because it’s a new experience that will ultimately bring new challenges, lessons, and greater possibilities.

When I read the theme “INFILTRATIONS” it reminded me of how lightning is formed. Negative energy with positive energy equals lightning. The question that popped up in my head when I thought of that is, “Can one bad outcome create a better future?”

For instance, many of the infiltration examples I read had negative connotations like, “Christian missionaries infiltrated indigenous communities to exploit them.” Reading that statement, I first thought to myself, “How can a group that promotes unity exploit a vulnerable community?” However, if that incident would have never happened, there’s a chance I would’ve never existed.

So it leads back to my question, “Could negative moments in history create a better future?” This is part of the reason why I am thrilled to be apart of the FLEFF blogger internship. I will be able to answer this question along with several other questions my curious mind has.
